Positive and negative motivation



Motivation can come from a variety of sources and in both positive and negative ways. Positive motivation is the type of motivation a person feels when he expects reward and Negative motivation is the type of feeling a person gets when he expects punishment.
Difference:  Positive and Negative motivation
Both positive and negative motivation have internal & external aspect as mentioned in below graphic image.
Both kind of motivation can lead to the same result however overuse of negative motivation may result in problems like hating the person who uses it against you.
Positive motivation doesn't have side effects on the long run while negative motivation may have some.


When to use negative motivation
Negative motivation is only recommended when proper escapement channels are available.
If the person knows how to escape the punishment, then negative motivation is certainly going to be effective. If person don’t know what to do in order to solve the problem and if you use negative motivation they get depressed.
This explains why some people become depressed when they face a problem while others never experience depression on facing the same problem.
Sometimes management may be compelled to use negative motivation technique with a view to preventing some people in organisation from undesirable behaviour. This may be effective only for a short-term to motivation some person. Therefore, manager should adopt positive techniques to motivate their employees.

Using positive and negative motivation together
Should you use the stick or the carrot?
Its advised that you use positive and negative motivation together whenever possible because it has been proven that people become more productive that way.
The best professionals are always driven by their own internal passion and commitments.
